Directory Indexing
Here is a sample
of a server-generated directory.
Windows httpd allows you to create HTML catalogs of your directories, in
order to tell users what's in them. A catalog can be held in document or
generated by the server on-the-fly.
In the latter case, the server will
automatically
extract the <TITLE>...</TITLE>
text from HTML documents
in the directory and use that for the description field!
The server-generated directory listing
can contain the following configurable items:
- Icons which are mapped to various file types. You choose the icons
and their mapping to file types.
The icons themselves can optionally be hyperlinks to the files,
as well as the filenames.
- A descriptive string for each file, which you specify. It is even
possible to have the descriptive string be an HTML link to a hidden
document that gives a detailed description of the file. If given for
an HTML document, this overrides the automatic title extraction.
- A hidden "readme" file for each directory that is automatically displayed
as part of the directory listing.
